Saratoga Non-Profit Gives Retired Horses Renewed Purpose Helping Vets

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — The end of a horse’s career on the track doesn’t mean that horse’s impact in Saratoga is over.

The non-profit “Saratoga WarHorse” takes retired Thoroughbreds and pairs them with veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress.

The experience helps the vets cope with some of the symptoms that come with PTSD.

Sunday they were at the race course’s Community Booth, spreading awareness about what they do.

Their representative, a veteran who graduated from the program, now volunteers with WarHorse.

“I think certain counseling doesn’t always work, but somehow there’s that Connection with the animal that breaks that barrier down and makes them understand how to work through the process with post-traumatic stress disorder,” said Nicolle Bibeau, a Saratoga WarHorse graduate.

The program is offered for free to veterans.
